You might be wondering what shops would be best for last minute Christmas shopping and what the Christmas shopping hours would be. This list aims to provide options for your last-minute Christmas shopping in Australia’s major cities.

1. Sydney

Parking in a major city like Sydney is a nightmare especially during the Christmas season where everyone is dashing to the stores to get their presents for their loved ones. In 2017, the city council provided Parramatta with free parking for Christmas until Boxing Day.

  • Westfield Parramatta Shopping Centre boasts of fashion stores, department stores and electronics sporting goods. They generally open from 9am to 6:30pm, so you still have time to drop by after work. You may take advantage of the Parramatta free parking for Christmas on the streets.

  • Macquarie Centre is open from 9:30am to 6pm, and it has The Face Shop, Healthy Life, and many fashion stores to choose from.

  • Chatswood Chase, like most shops, opens from 9:30am to 5:30pm except on Thursdays, when it remains open until 9pm. Aje and Mecca are some of the well-known shops in Chatswood. You may take advantage of the valet parking for $12, or find your own parking. The first three hours are free.

2. Melbourne

  • Perimeter Books, found on 748 High Street, Thornbury, is the best shop for booklovers.

  • Emporium offers a broad selection of stores, including Australia’s first Uniqlo. Emporium Christmas Parking was free for 5,800 car parks in 2014. This year, it is expected that Emporium Christmas Parking for 12,000 cars would be free.

  • Chadstone is considered the biggest shopping mall in Australia and is tagged as the fashion capital. It is usually open from 9am to 5:30pm, except on Sundays when it is open from 10am to 7pm, and on Fridays from 9am to 9pm. This means you can do some late night Christmas shopping here.

3. Brisbane

  • Macarthur Central Shopping Centre has Apple, Big W and Specialty stores. Woolworths is open from 7am to 9pm on  Mondays to Saturdays, and 9am to 6pm on Sundays, so you can drop by before you head to the office.

  • The Myer Centre is found on Queen Street at Brisbane CBD and it includes shops like Spendless Shoes, Lowes and Jeanswest. They even offer deals! It opens from 9am to 5:30pm.

  • Queen Street Mall is one of the most recognised shopping spots in Queensland. It has indoor shopping and outdoor retailers set on grey cobblestone walkways.

4. Perth

Christmas shopping hours are scaled back in Perth. Extended retail trading during the Christmas season is down to 39 additional hours from 49. Shops open at 7am during weekdays starting on  December 17. Well-known places to go for last minute shopping are at Karrinyup Centre, Forrest Chase and London Court.

5. Darwin

The top three places to visit for some Christmas shopping here are Casuarina Shopping Square, Mitchell Centre and the Smith Street Mall. Casuarina is packed with well-known retailers like Best and Less, City Beach and The Body Shop. It opens from 8am to 6pm. Mitchell Centre also offers free parking for two hours and is open from 10am to 3pm.

6. Canberra

Canberra Centre is open from 9am to 6pm except on Fridays when trading hours are extended until 9pm. Canberra Centre is closed on Christmas Day.

Other places to visit are Westfield Belconnen and Southpoint.

7. Hobart

  • Eastlands Centre has Big W and other retail stores. Big W is usually open from 9am to 9pm on weekdays and from 8am to 6pm on weekends.  

Salamanca Markets is a great place to find handicrafts and souvenirs in the 300 stalls available in the area.

Elizabeth Mall is another popular destination.

  • Elizabeth Shopping Centre Christmas hours are found online, so you can easily schedule the time of your visit. This shopping centre is found at 50 Elizabeth Way and opens from 9am to 5:30pm. You may also follow them on their Facebook account to know more about its shops.
